A cold business is heating up in time for summer.
Two ice cream shops, two frozen yogurt shops and a gallery that serves gelato have opened recently, and a Dairy Queen restaurant is set to open in July. A longtime ice cream maker opened a parlor.
Hedonist Artisan Ice Cream is the newest addition. At 672 South Ave., it’s next door to Hedonist Artisan Chocolates, which is known for handmade chocolate truffles and other candy.
Co-owner Jennifer Posey said the ice cream shop will continue the chocolate shop’s devotion to unique recipes and high standards.
“(The) South Wedge needed an ice cream shop,” Posey said. “We thought, ‘What a great addition an artisan ice cream shop would be.’ ”
Posey said the shop focuses on quality over quantity, offering only eight flavors at a time, in small batches and made with mostly local products. Almost everything from the dairy to the toppings and syrups come from nearby stores.
“It was a great opportunity to use new, interesting flavors using ice cream instead of chocolate,” she said.
